SUNDAY 27th Galtees (B)
This trek will take 5 to 5.5.We will approach Galtee Mor from the North West side. The day will begin by walking along a dirt track that starts from Kings car park which is newly added to an already existing farm yard. There are toilet and shower facilities along with a drinks dispenser. From here there is a slight ascent for about 30 minutes before we veer off and head up towards the wall which doubles as a hand rail the whole way over to Galtee Mor (919m)
There is no consistent path through the turfy; sheep grazed grass so if the day is wet we will need our gaiters. If we get a good day the views are magnificent, to the southeast the Comeragh and Knockmealdown Mountains are prominent, and to the northwest the Shannon Estuary is visible on a clear day. From Galtee Mor, if we’re up for it, we will trek over to Galtee Beag before heading back down again.

This is the venue for this year’s club picnic. Despite the horrendous weather last year we had a memorable day by the lake! And so we will do it again. Any of you who would like to come along and join in the fun please contact Dave as we will need to know numbers for the food, how many boxes of wine to bring along and to make sure our chef Dave and co will get to eat this time as last year I do believe we ran out of food!
For any of you adventurous ones who will hop into a kayak or canoe or would just like to join Henry in a summer swim in the lake please contact Evan (086 6004091) as he will bring a couple of instructors. Bring along a wet suit. If you don’t have one, let Evan know and he may be able to sort you out. You’ll also need togs and towels. Make sure you pack an umbrella!

SEPTEMBER 2010
SUNDAY 5th Carrauntuohill via Brother O’Sheas (A)
This is one of the most popular routes to the summit of Carrauntuohill. It really is for fit trekkers. Aside from it being a 6 hour day, it also includes a lot of scrambling. The climb will take its toll on the legs so the trip down can be hard on the knees. If you are among some of the few who have been doing the B+ 6 hour days and you feel you might like to give it a go and the weather is good on the day then give Jackie a call on 087 9281248 and we can set up an extra leader to follow Harry’s group up to the top. This way you will not have to keep up the pace of the stronger walkers but get there in your own time.
MEETING: Texaco Garage Killarney 9.15am
LEADER: Harry Burke 085 1533811
SUNDAY 05th Torc Mountain, Killarney (C)
This starts along the old Kenmare Road and takes us to the top of Torc Mountain with magnificent views over Killarney & the lakes on a clear day. A windy spot at the top so have your wind-cheaters.
Meeting: Molly Darcy’s car park, 11.00am
Leader: Henry Caulfield 087 9395884
SUNDAY 12th Cummeengeera (A)
Situated 17 miles south west of Kenmare through the village of Lauragh and west of Glanmore Lake, this is a high level walk along cliffs and steep slopes around the remote valley of Cummeengeera with magnificent views on a clear day. No difficulties except navigation in bad visibility.
Meeting: Kenmare, SuperValu opposite the Church, 09.30am
Leader: Evan Roberts 086 6004091
SUNDAY 12th Sheep’s Head (B)
The walk should take 5 to 5 ½ hours depending on pace but definitely 5 hours.
We meet at Kilcrohane Church, pool cars, drive maybe 10mins and park cars.
The route takes us up to the top of Tooreen with wonderful views of the Beara peninsula and Dunmanus Bay; we might even see basking sharks. Going back in time you will see the dwelling houses located at the 19th century copper mines. We carry on our walk with the sea all round us and head for the wonderful café and have our lunch there. We can then head back via the lighthouse where rugged cliff edge views await us. If we go via the lighthouse it might take slightly longer.
MEETING: Kilcrohane RC Church 10.00am
LEADER: Brid Callanan 086 3724477
SUNDAY 12th Mushera (C)
This walk is mainly on woodland paths and will be from around the base of the hill to the top. Not too difficult an ascent; we will come down the more direct and slightly steeper path. Not difficult and should take about 2.5 hours.
MEETING: Millstreet Country Park Main Gate 11.00am
LEADER: Mary O’Connor 087 2941794
SUNDAY 19th Mangerton (B)
A great favorite. This is a 4 to 5 hour day and one for any of you who are keen to try walking up a mountain on rough ground. Most of the walk is on a path but there is a part of the walk on stone. The start of the walk can be quiet mucky. On a good clear day there will be magnificent views. So come on out and join us for this wonderful day on the hills.
MEETING: Glenflesk Service Station 10.00am
LEADER: Mary Power 087 2766885
SUNDAY 19th Mangerton (C)
Henry will take any of you looking for an extra challenge to join him on one of his favourite treks to Mangerton. You can go as far as the lake that sits at the bottom of the peak or continue up to the summit or you can take an extra walk around the lake itself while keeping an eye on the others above. Or you can simply sit and enjoy the tranquility that surrounds this area. You will need boots, walking poles and gaiters. Contact Henry.
MEETING : Glenflesk Service Station 10.00am
LEADER : Henry Caulfield 087 9395884
SUNDAY 26th Mahon Falls (A, B)
This is one of our great “doubles”. Evan will take you up the side of the waterfall and veering off to the right will then scramble up through the grassy gully to the plateau above. If this is your first attempt at a route like this, contact Evan. If the weather is wet then this route becomes tricky.
Meanwhile, Harry will take his crew up and around the very pleasant horseshoe walk, probably stopping at the top of the gully for lunch while waiting for the others to appear from below.
MEETING: Campus Service Station, Dungarvan, 10.00am
LEADERS: Evan Roberts 086 6004091 & Harry Burke 085 1533811
SUNDAY 26th Local Cork Walk (C)
A local walk that will take about 3 hours; no need to travel far just cross the river to the north side! Start at Killeens along the lovely walkway to Blarney village (where if Mick is with us we can stop for an ice cream!) On to Waterloo by the river walk and return to Killeens along a nice country road.
MEETING: Sunset Ridge, Killeens 11.00am
LEADER: Helen Goggin 086 8756547
Oct 02nd -03rd Comeragh Weekend
An A and a C walk on Sat 2nd Oct (in the Rathgormack area), followed by an evening of socialising and song in the world famous, (yet quietly understated), Haughton's Bar. Staying the night in Waterford, and then a ramble up Slievenamon (C standard walk) on the Sunday morning, culminating in Sunday lunch at the world famous, (and utterly charming), McCarthy's Bar (featured strongly in the Pete McCarthy book of the same name) in Fethard, before heading for home.
More details to follow closer to the time.
